Podiatric physicians are the premiere specialists for medicine and surgery of the foot and ankle in the U.S. Podiatrists receive a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) from one of seven accredited podiatric medical schools in the country. Podiatric medical school is four years in length after one completes a science or pre-medical bachelor degree program. Podiatrists are defined as physicians and have the ability to prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform surgery. In the state of Colorado podiatrists are licensed and regulated by the department of regulatory agencies under physicians.
After completing podiatric medical school, podiatrists go through residency training in an accredited hospital. Residency programs range from one to three years. Dr. Still completed three years of post-graduate training with an emphasis on surgery of the foot and ankle. Residency programs focus on medicine and surgery of the foot and ankle in close relation with other physicians and resident physicians in orthopedics, family practice, internal medicine, infectious disease, endocrinology, emergency medicine, general, vascular and plastic surgery.
Podiatric physicians vary in the types of surgery they perform and care they provide. They often work closely with your primary care doctor to provide the best and most appropriate care possible for foot and ankle problems.
Dr. Still received extensive training with both podiatric and orthopedic physicians in trauma of the foot and ankle. He has considerable experience in treating foot and ankle fractures. In addition he has been trained in ankle arthroscopy. Dr Still also performs replacement of the great toe joint for severe arthritis. He also is trained to perform shock way therapy for chronic heal pain (plantar fasciitis). This is a new non-invasive alternative to surgery. Dr. Still also has extensive experience with wound care and limb salvage, always working closely with other physician specialties for a TEAM approach to healthcare. Dr. Still frequently uses the most advanced techniques in wound care, including use of Human Bioengineered Skin Grafts.
He frequently prescribes foot inserts (custom orthotics) and specialized footwear. Dr. Still has found recent success with the Sole Supports brand of custom orthotics designed by podiatrist, Edward Glaser. These orthotics are made with a slightly higher arch that contours or offers 'full contact' of the arch. These type of orthotics work well for the foot type without deformity and for the patient with an active or athletic lifestyle. Dr. Still can also cast and fit specialized orthotics for patients with diabetes, arthritis or painful deformities. Dr. Still also works closely with brace and shoe specialists for special needs patients.
As a surgeon, Dr Still has privileges to perform surgery at multiple facilities. These are: Lutheran Medical Center, St. Anthony's Hospital, North Suburban Medical Center, The Surgery Center at Lutheran in Wheat Ridge , North Suburban Surgery Center in Thornton and North Colorado Surgery Center in Greeley.
